Can photographic images make causes, consequences and solutions of the global climate crisis visible? While artists and exhibitions deal with climate change and sound the alarm in view of the impending climate catastrophe, the question of the environmental friendliness or sustainability of the art business arises: Can institutions create ecological awareness at the content level while acting in a climate-friendly way within the common practice of exhibition making? In "The World and Us: Photography and Climate Change" artists and curators discuss the challenges of the climate crisis and their relationship to art from both institutional and artistic perspectives.

Nada Rosa Schroer studied cultural studies, staging of the arts and media, and cultures of the curatorial in Leipzig and Hildesheim. She currently works as a curator for the media art festival FUTUR 21 and the Temporary Gallery Cologne, among others. Previously, she was a research assistant at the Institute for Art and Art Theory at the University of Cologne and curatorial assistant at the Academy of the Arts of the World in Cologne.
The Polar Silk Road
Verena Kaspar-Eisert in conversation with Gregor Sailer about his latest photo project "The Polar Silk Road", his artistic approach and his experiences and insights with regard to visualizing and communicating the effects of the climate crisis.
Verena Kaspar-Eisert has been curator at KUNST HAUS WIEN since 2014 and curator of the FOTO WIEN photo festival since 2019, specializing in contemporary photography and art that addresses ecological issues. At KUNST HAUS WIEN, she curated international group exhibitions addressing the relationship between humans and nature in the age of the Anthropocene.
Gregor Sailer completed his diploma studies in communication design with a focus on photography and experimental film at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Sailer also completed his Master's degree in Photographic Studies at this institution in 2015. Numerous of his photo series have been published as photo books, most recently "The Polar Silk Road" was published by Kehrer Verlag. The artist lives and works in Tyrol.
On the ecological question in the exhibition space
How can ecological thinking be tested in the exhibition space, from the selection of artists and works to production and mediation? When art and nature interact, the individual aspects of exhibition making can no longer be considered autonomously.
Cale Garrido is a journalist, photo editor and curator. She works on documentary and artistic photography projects, exhibitions and publications. In 2016-2020, she served as photo editor for Greenpeace-related publications in Germany. In 2022 she took over the curatorial coordination for the 8th Triennale of Photography in Hamburg under the artistic direction of Koyo Kouoh.
Moritz Ohlig studied Classical Archaeology and Ancient History in Heidelberg (BA) and Exhibition Design in Graz (MA). Initially, he worked as an exhibition designer for various institutions. Since 2021 he has been working at the Museum Sinclair-Haus, Foundation Art and Nature and is assistant curator there since 2022.
Emergency art and climate activism
What contribution can photographic thematization of the climate crisis make? Oliver Ressler and Beate Gütschow on new paths between activism and image-making, artistic practices in times of a rapidly advancing ecological crisis, and climate justice movements and their relationship to art.
In her photographic works, Beate Gütschow deals with the difference between photographic representation and reality. She has been a professor of artistic photography at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne since 2011. She is currently focusing on the global climate crisis and its consequences.
Oliver Ressler works as an artist and filmmaker on economics, democracy, migration, climate crisis, forms of civil disobedience and social alternatives. He was a participant in the biennials in Taipei 2008, Lyon 2009, Venice 2013, Kiev, 2017 and Documenta 14 in Kassel 2017, among others.
